Pre-E3 2018: Rumor Roundup – the good, the bad, and the ugly

With E3 2018 just 8 days away, a whirlwind of rumors and leaks have surrounded the upcoming ‘super bowl’ of video games. As we come closer to the real thing, many gamers enjoy to find out what might be at the event before it happens. This can be a recipe for let-down, but as long as you don’t take these rumors and leaks too seriously, it could be fun for some people. In any event, we tried to discuss how likely each of these rumors are.

This year some leaks have led to instant confirmations by game companies who probably don’t want their fans to suffer waiting. There were still a lot of fake ones being created by fans who just wish to have their ideas come true. Perhaps some of the people who make fake rumors just want their ideas to get out there so that game companies might make them a reality next time around. Or perhaps some of them knew some real information that got delayed or changed last minute by executive decisions. Without further ado, here are the E3 2018 rumors!

GameStop closing 150 stores

f25

This past holiday season saw a sales decline in sales for GameStop, who are now closing 150 stores this year because of it. This past Tuesday it was revealed that GameStop has seen a 13.6% drop in global sales from last year. Which GameStop blamed on “aggressive console promotions” by other retailers, and weak sales of big AAA video games during the holiday season.  Of course increased competition from mainly Amazon and Wal-Mart have put pressure on GameStop lately, but the rise of digital sales is the biggest threat to them, as they mainly sell physical media. The fall of GameStop is approaching in the coming years, we should all prepare for this reality.

Editor’s Note: It’s worth mentioning that 2016 was a year in which GameStop closed many stores but continued to innovate their internal systems to better serve customers biggest complaints about their shopping experience. In 2015 RGN EIC Jon Ireson wrote, “Top 3 Ways GameStop Can Win Back Gamers’ Trust” echoing the voice of gamers built up over recent years. It would appear the company has responded positively to such feedback, and are attempting to improve for the better – but as mentioned above, a melding of GameStop’s physical stores and digital goods will need to happen to maximize intuitive sales overall. Upcoming articles from this publication will further discuss new ways retailers will begin to combine digital and physical product sales methods.

Avoid Purchasing Batman: Arkham Knight’s Red Hood DLC on Ebay Unless You like Getting Ripped Off

redhood

Rocksteady Studios’ Batman: Arkham Knight released last week and those who didn’t pre-order from GameStop missed out on the exclusive Red Hood Story DLC. The story pack puts players in the shoes of the Red Hood as he hunts down Black Mask, one of Gotham’s most notorious villains.

It should come as no surprise that some would take to putting the DLC up on Ebay for sale. Anyone considering purchasing a code however, would be wise to do the exact opposite as the prices are too damn high! Even if you are a die hard fan of the Dark Knight, paying $43 is a huge rip off. The story is extremely short much like the Harley Quinn DLC, which many claim can be beaten in less than 20 minutes.

There are cheaper offers within the $20 and $30 range but that is still too much, especially when you consider the $40 season pass. Rocksteady recently clarified that all pre-order DLC will become available for season pass owners at a later date. So if you already bought the pass, you are guaranteed to receive the DLC. Buying the Red Hood Story Pack on top of the season pass means you are paying for it twice.

red

That’s more than the damn Season Pass.

Simply put, be patient and do not buy any Red Hood DLC from Ebay.

Tomb Raider: The Ten Thousand Immortals Review

TR Immortals

Tomb Raider: The Ten Thousand Immortals by bestselling British novelist and comic book writer, Dan Abnett and Nik Vincent, is a novel continuing Lara Croft’s adventure and takes place between the events on Yamatai in the Tomb Raider reboot and the next to be released game title. This tale is considered cannon and acknowledge as such by developer Crystal Dynamics.

The story starts off with Lara being thrown into a panic attack by the startling and loud backfire of a neighbor’s car engine. As she takes to the streets of London, for a therapeutic walk to soothe her nerves, she receives a call informing her that Sam (best friend, roommate and designated damsel in distress), has been admitted into a hospital. Upon her arrival, Lara discovers her friend is in a coma suspected to be induced by a drug overdose.  However, having both recently survived supernatural events, Lara has her own suspicions about the cause of Sam’s condition. Therein, begins the quest to find an artifact of legend with healing capabilities able to restore her friend to health.

Lara travels to several locations around Europe in search of information and leads, meeting with professors, antique collectors and shady business men with auras of danger. In her pursuit of the relic, she finds there are others who would kill without hesitation to gain possession of it and Lara must fight for her life in order to save Sam’s. Savvy as she is, Lara is able to gain the trust and employ the help of hastily made acquaintances, using their skills and knowledge to advance her progress or escape danger as necessary.

TR

Story line aside, the delivery left more to be desired. Everything was over simplified, there were no puzzles or need for in depth thinking, answers were basically thrown at her and the vocabulary and descriptions were basic. The action scenes were fun, but the majority of the down time was spent giving trivial descriptions of Lara navigating city streets and public transportation; if only to display her observation skills and paranoia, to then watch them fail her miserably on more than one occasion. Having seen and experienced the trials of Yamatai alongside reboot Lara, there are certain things she should definitely be able to handle. Not so, in this novel. It’s as if she’s starting over in skill level. Retaining the memory of her previous adventure, but none of the character development.

Final Verdict:

I will not claim to not have enjoyed the book at all, but my expectations for a Tomb Raider title were not met and often times I found myself bored and actually making an effort to continue reading. I would recommend this novel to a younger audience, not formally acquainted to classic Lara or reboot Lara for that matter. Large font, basic vocabulary and simple writing earned this novel a 7.2 rating.

WTF Wednesdays: inFamous Condoms

WTF Wedsnesday

Welcome to another edition of WTF Wednesdays, where we bring you gaming related content that makes you go wtf, be it what, who or why?As I’m sure you’ve already put together from the title and picture, this week’s topic revolves around developer Super Punch’s latest title and condoms.

What does inFamous: Second Son have to do with condoms you ask? Well in the context of the game, nothing, nothing at all. Regardless of the fact, it didn’t stop GameStop from offering special themed condoms as a pre-order bonus. Yeah you read that right.

Infamous condoms

If you are wondering how come you never heard (For those of you who haven’t) of this pre-order bonus, it is because this was exclusive to GameStop in Italy. I myself just learned of this ridiculousness today. But that’s not all…

Glow condoms

Yep, they glow in the dark

wtfjackie

Yes Mr. Chan, what the f*** were they thinking indeed. Who thought this was a good idea? I’m not saying gamers don’t get laid or anything like that but no, just no. Imagine the wrong kind of message the parents got, when purchasing the game for their young teens and such. How awkward it must have been to show up on release day to receive not only the game but a box of condoms as well. Also why the f*@# do they glow in the dark, what purpose does that serve? Are they in case of a potential blackout and you need to find your way to..*ahem*.

Seriously, what the f***?

GameStop Pre-Order Trade-In Bonuses Might Die Off; Radical Changes Coming This Month

GameStop More Money Program

It appears GameStop is ushering in a new level of “power to the players” by revamping their trade-in offerings as well as renaming them in the terms they use while speaking to customers. From now on, GameStop employees will tell you “Cash isn’t the only way to pay for games, you know” and then proceed to ask you “When’s the last time we bought a game off of you or you sold a game to us?” in order to draw attention to the demographic that they claim does not know trade-ins exist (2/3 of GameStop customers according to internal documents leaked through mainstream media this evening).

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

GameStop has used some pretty fancy wording here to make it sound like trade-ins are going to net gamers a lot more cash than ever before, and to some extent that is technically true. Take a look at the bigger picture though… With a bullet point reading off “Our average trade ranges from $7.20 to $14.00 with a base of $9.00. We are elevating the average base value up 20% or to $11.00.” which essentially confuses the issue that you’re looking at a two dollar increase for the average game – nothing major.

THE BIG NEWS THOUGH IF NEED TRUE is that there will allegedly no longer be anything extra for trading in your games towards a pre-order of the latest upcoming games you want (according to Kotaku). Perhaps all of those Last of Us: Remastered trade-ins finally caught up with them? It did sound too good to be true after all, leaving one to ponder ‘how did GS even profit off of that?’ and now we have our answer. They didn’t do too good off of it because now that type of promotional campaign is a thing of the past. On August 18, 2014 you’ll always get the same price trading in your games, whether it’s towards Far Cry 4, Destiny, Halo 5, The Order, or just some Steam Wallet. Of course, you’ll still be punished with a % removed from your value if you want to walk away with actual cash – which sort of makes the whole “When’s the last time we bought games off of you?” pitch sound pretty lame when you think about it.

GameStop More Money New Trade In

It’s easy for this so sound like a good deal, but I’m not the only one who’s less than impressed with a 20% increase on what is already pitiful prices. After all, 20% of nothing is still nothing (metaphorically speaking, since they are offering more than nothing).

Kotaku author Jason Schreier-

-who first broke the story tells us in plain English that his last trade in got him just 25 cents and under the new system it would be worth 30 cents. A trade-in worth 10 bucks today will be worth “maybe” 12 bucks after the August 18, 2014 update. Two bucks ladies and gentleman. That is the price GameStop loyalists will be paid for being stripped of their precious pre-order / upgrade bonuses. Jason broke the story from insider sources (complete with visual evidence and training notes on how employees will be coached to comply with these new procedures).

It always gets weirder in the comments section though…

It seems that even those involved with GameStop are unsure if they are really going to get rid of promotions entirely or just ease off them for a while. The author of the original source of this leak even seems unsure with GameStop employees confessing they know about all of this, but not about the dumping of the promotional pre-order bonus. It is even claimed that that feature in fact is not being removed or at least not just yet – since a promotion is scheduled to be revealed on the same day as the new trade-in program. Confusing indeed. Be sure to check out the very last sentence in the GameStop internal document beneath this conversation between the author and a GameStop employee currently briefed on the new program.

Decide for yourself, is GameStop hanging on by a thread? Or is this a major plus one for gamers everywhere?

Have a look at some of the feedback for yourself as well as the original source post below:

GameStop Fingerprinting Customers in Philadelphia

GSLOGO

As the title states apparently local law enforcement has requested GameStop to start fingerprinting customers when they trade in items such as phones, video games, or consoles. Some People who live in Philadelphia though are opposed to being fingerprinted saying “it isn’t right” and that it violates a sense of privacy they should have. But GameStop just says they are following local law that states that the retailer is permitted to collect a customer’s thumbprints. Apparently these scans make their way to a local database which helps scan for suspicious persons who may be trying to trade / sell a stolen video game or other expensive items.

Although GameStop may not be required to collect these thumbprints, it hasn’t stopped them from implementing the rule in several of the stores located in Philadelphia. It is a new rule I would not like to see in my home town, however, if this were to happen I’d be sure to make up some story about my thumbs being burnt after “accidentally” burning my hand on a stove. Well that’s all for now, be sure to comment below with how you feel about the subject.

The Red Hood Will Be Delivering his Ruthless Style of Justice in Batman: Arkham Knight Via Pre-Order Bonus

2014_batman_arkham_knight-wide

It seems Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham Knight is getting yet another pre-order bonus and this time it is a Gamestop exclusive. Those who reserve a copy of the game at the retailer for the platform of their choice will receive the exclusive ‘Red Hood Story Pack’ allowing them to play as the “Ruthless Vigilante”.

RedHoodArkhamKnight

Red Hood looks pretty badass and is actually sporting a red hood, unlike his comic book counterpart who wore a red helmet. I’m personally looking forward to play through his story. Guess I know which retailer I’m pre-ordering the game from…well played Gamestop, well played.
