Original Story as follows:
After teasing fans this past week, Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has konfirmed via twitter that the next entry in the popular fighting franchise will be called Mortal Kombat X. A follow up to 2011’s Mortal Kombat (aka MK9), X is the tenth installment in the main series and will launch in 2015 according to the official announcement trailer.
Titled ‘Who’s Next’ the trailer features franchise icons and eternal rivals Sub-Zero and Scorpion engaging in a fight to the death that is both equal parts brutal and beautiful. Based on the visually stunning trailer that may or have not been made up of in-engine footage (the character models certainly moved and fought like it), personal weapons and interactive environments will make a return as well brutal X-ray attacks first introduced in 2011’s MK title.
While the description for the video on Youtube states that MKX will be “Fueled by next-gen technology”, the game’s official website konfirms a 2015 release for PS4, Xbox One, PC as well as PS3 and Xbox 360. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment President Martin Tremblay issued a statement on the newest title.
“Mortal Kombat is our acclaimed, world-renowned franchise and we are now advancing the fighting genre with Mortal Kombat X: NetherRealm Studios is best in class at delivering games fans love and they are taking their iconic brand to the next level with Mortal Kombat X.”
Ed Boon also had this to say:
“Mortal Kombat has always been about over-the-top, visceral fighting and with Mortal Kombat X we wanted to utilize the power of new-gen consoles to give players our most intense game yet. The team has worked hard to make sure Mortal Kombat X delivers everything fans expect along with new characters, new game modes and an all new graphics engine.”
So any MK fans who yet to go next-gen need not worry. Check out some key art below as well as the awesome trailer which features “Can’t be stopped” by Wiz Kahlifa. Many will find the track it bit out of place for a Mortal Kombat game and while it did catch me off guard the first time watching it, it has managed to grow on me after multiple viewings. No doubt fans will get to see the game in action at E3 next week. The lineup just got even more exciting.
