Putty Squad Review

Putty Squad PS4 Review

Putty Squad is a new puzzle game that attempts to mix elements from the platform genre in the way that the original title did back in the 90’s on the Amiga and Super Nintendo platforms. Unfortunately, Putty Squad on the PlayStation 4 is a disgrace to even the original retro titles which it is based on – and leaves players with the feeling of being tasked with an immense chore rather than a fun gameplay experience.

The generic approach taken with gameplay mechanics frustratingly finding a way to become more and more complex per puzzle yet still solved with very basic moves is extremely lackluster. During playing, it can be felt that this title had a huge potential for fun factor – and we hope to offer constructive criticisms throughout this review on how to improve in future releases regarding this franchise.

Putty Squad RealGamerNewz Review

Putty Squad starts out feeling like a platformer similar to the most popular ones in the genre, then introduces its puzzle mechanics with a sort of teleportation experience as players use Stretch and Morph, Punch and Bounce moves to navigate. Graphically the title looks good, and that’s a saving grace for any game these days – however, the fact that players are meant to be met with the gameplay presented as somehow fun or worthwhile is frankly offensive. Audio can be described as truthfully annoying with very little to be enjoyed and mainly generic music that seems aimed at getting children’s heart levels pumping while failing miserably at the intricate and frustrating gameplay and level designs in the game.

Over 50 levels are earnestly crafted for players by System 3 and yet none of them manage to remain fun the entire way through. Many of these use repeating backgrounds and graphics / enemies, which would be acceptable if the puzzles didn’t simply reveal themselves by abruptly interrupting otherwise fluid platformer gameplay rather than fitting into the game naturally as seen in previous installments of the franchise.

Having a 900MB install is reasonable and the game engine’s performance is decent. There’s not a lot of replay value for a game that most players will barely be able to stomach in the first place, but for the developer’s merit the inclusion of Remote Play, Trophies, and 1080P HD Graphics are noteworthy for those who can still be interested after viewing the Official Brian Blessed Trailer for the game below and making their own decisions based on all of the available info.

Nuclear Throne (PS4 Next Gen Exclusive) – PlayStation Trailer [HD]

Nuclear Throne PlayStation Trailer

Nuclear Throne will appear exclusively on the PlayStation 4 in terms of the next-gen version, however it will also be available on the Xbox One later down the line. The reason for this delay in platform release is because of Microsoft’s parity clause and the loophole out of it which Vlambeer opted for. For those who haven’t heard yet, Microsoft currently (at the time of this post’s writing) enacts a clause on all game makers to put their game out on Xbox One and PS4 at the same exact time or forfeit the right to release on Xbox One at all. To avoid conflict during a transition into next-gen though, Microsoft allows that clause to be ignored if a PS4 contract was already signed before the title was submitted for publishing on the Xbox One platform.

For many development studios, particularly small and efficient indie teams, it is simply not possible to be that precise with releasing multiple platforms at once and so Vlambeer has opted to go this route with the title that is based in the 8 bit art style and uses sci-fi as well as modern and traditional role playing / action gameplay elements. Check out the PlayStation trailer for the title below which will also become available for PS3, Windows PC, Mac OS X, and PlayStation Vita.

Dragon Fin Soup (PC / PS4 / PS3 / Vita) – Tactical Action RPG Alpha Gameplay w/ Commentary [HD 1080P]

Dragon Fin Soup - RealGamerNewz - Kickstarter IndieSpotlight

Dragon Fin Soup is a game that has completely surpassed its goals in a crowd-funding effort on Kickstarter in order to bring to the gaming world something truly special. This unique Tactical RPG will arrive on the Windows PC, PlayStation 4, Sony PS3, and PS Vita. This game aims to reproduce the retro feel of SNES Era role playing games, mixing Action elements in a similar way to Secret of Mana’s gameplay battle system.

Another feature that will leave the RPG hardcore die-hard crowd pleased is the fact Dragon Fin Soup is also a Roguelike experience. A story featuring down to earth, flawed but intriguing characters, and a gripping turn of events is also promised. With over 300% funding on Kickstarter, many Stretch Goals have been met as well and the game’s release across these many ambitious platforms has been secured. On PC it will have support for both Mac and Linux in addition to Windows and will also be featured on the Steam market.

Classic elements such as inventory management, item accumulation, HP / Mana management, and exploration are in some ways resurrected from the golden age of the genre and re-invented where development studio Grimm Bros has saw fit. The team was highly inspired by titles such as Chocobo Dungeon and is made up by just five talented people who have managed to get the game this far and show it off in the Alpha version footage seen below.

Some of the bonus features unlocked by the generous Kickstarter backer support include Endless Labyrinth Mode, Online Leader Boards, Additional Porting cost for PS3, PS4, Vita, Asian / Oriental Weapon Pack, Sheep Pet Quest, and Playable Skeletons in Survival / Labyrinth Modes.

Mighty No. 9 (PS4 / XO / PC / PS3 / 360 / Vita / 3DS) – Inafune Draws Humanoid Robot Enemy [Japan] Comcept #GameDev

Mighty No 9 PS4 - RealGamerNewz - indie mega man

In the following video, Keiji Inafune (creator of Mega Man franchise) draws a Humanoid Robot Enemy for the upcoming video game Mighty No. 9 which was Kickstarted by Inafune and the video game community and will launch some time during April 2015 on the PC (Windows, Mac, Linux) via Steam, Sony PS4, Sony PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii U, PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS platforms.

For those who might be wondering how Inafune is able to make a game so similar to his original creation, the Mega Man series, Capcom has granted this to Inafune as a gesture of appreciation for his work at Capcom over the years and a respect for his talent creating the Mega Man franchise in the first place, which has helped make Capcom what it is today. Mighty No. 9 is essentially an indie game by Comcept and Mega Man will remain an IP owned by Capcom, but there’s just something nice about the two finding room to co-exist and grow together in the video games industry.

Galak-Z

Indie developer 17-BIT, creator of the indie PC strategy title “Skulls of the Shogun” announced on the North American Playstation blog that it will be bringing the rogue-like space shmup Galak-Z to the PS Vita.
